Govt urged to form comprehensive energy policy

PETALING JAYA: The government has been urged to formulate a comprehensive energy policy for the country and consult the producers as well as the end-users in forming the policy.

The Centre for Environment, Technology & Development, Malaysia (Cetdem) chairman Gurmit Singh said the policy should ensure that all forms of energy generated and sourced were utilised in a sustainable manner to ensure an adequate quality of life for all Malaysians.

He said there should also be appropriate strategies for energy conservation and renewable energy.

Gurmit said Energy, Water and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik was supportive when a memorandum calling for an energy policy was submitted on Feb 5.

"He (Lim) was receptive and agreed to have a roundtable discussions between Cetdem and ministry officials before the end of the month," he said at a press conference here on Wednesday.
